weekend update

Friday night we saw "Hugo", being the sole film this year to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Visual Effects, and met Baltimore's best bartender (according to the readers of City Paper).

Saturday we continued our tour of Baltimore's high-end coffee scene by visiting Zeke's.

Saturday night Morgan went to the Magic tournament with Tom, and I went to the symphony, and heard
J.S. Bach - Brandenburg Concerto No. 1
Rameau - Orchestral Suite from Naïs
Haydn - Trumpet Concerto
Mozart - Symphony No. 39

Sunday we continued our climate change journal club with a paper correlating SNPs in Arabidopsis thaliana with viability and fecundity grown in four different sites around Europe, and I wasn't really sure how the data they showed justified the conclusions they drew.

Sunday night we saw "Fifty Words" at Everyman.

weekend update

Saturday I worked, but then Morgan did take me out to lunch at Sticky Rice, which was very nice of him.

Saturday evening we grabbed a quick dinner at Fatburger (conclusion: not impressed, but maybe I missed the soul of it by not getting a burger with bacon, chili, and a fried egg) before going to Austin and Chantelle's for a dessert party.  My favorite was Austin's orange cake with cranberry glaze and cream cheese frosting, but his pound cake was very good too.

Sunday we visited the 1:1 scale model of the James Webb Space Telescope on display in the Inner Harbor, in a desperate attempt to muster public support and prevent its funding from being cut.

We had a nice chat with an engineer from Northrup Grumman, and saw a really wonderful presentation called Journey to the Edge of the Observable Universe.  If the telescope launches (2018 is the current estimate, assuming funding doesn't get cut (by ESA, because we don't do that sort of stuff anymore)), it will push that edge a little further away, and, because light only travels as fast as the speed of light, a little further back in time.  Hubble can see 13 billion light years, but the Big Bang was 13.7 billion years ago.

We made a quick trip to the library and the hardware store before going to Cylburn Arboretum to see Ruthie sing in the Handel Choir of Baltimore.  Our favorite was the Ernani Aguiar.

After the concert, Ruthie very kindly invited us back to her house, where we played Yggdrasil (a cooperative but not too complicated board game), had a nice dinner, and played with Hannah.

On the way home, we stopped at Afters and read our climate paper.

weekend update: Grand Prix

Friday evening we walked a bit around the racecourse to see what we could see, which was: a bit through the chain-link fence at Sharp and Conway, a bit through the chain-link fence at Lee and Light, and really quite a nice view from the foot of the hairpin on Light Street: you could see the cars coming straight down Light, and Light slopes a bit upward there, so it had a bit of a stadium-seating effect there.  But by the time we made it down there the racing had stopped for the day, so we went to dinner in Federal Hill, which seemed eerily deserted, especially for a Friday night.  (Probably because no one could get there, because Light Street was closed.)  We went to the Abbey Burger Bistro, where I risked Aristotelian evil (wishing for bad things and getting them) by building my own burger featuring the meat of the month: medium rare duck on a pretzel bun, with sauteed onions, mushrooms, brie, and white truffle oil, with the macaroni and cheese on the side.  It was quite rich, but really delicious.

Saturday we tried again to walk around downtown, which involved, as Jean Marbella said, walking miles but only going blocks, without seeing much besides the gulag-end of the fences, which got pretty tiring.  I concocted something for dinner inspired by Farm-Stand-Vegetable Green Curry, from Every Day with Rachael Ray, but used eggplant and zucchini instead of broccoli and bell peppers (because that's what the farmers market had Thursday), and non-green curry (because that's the only curry paste I could find at the Fresh & Green).  I served it with the last of our quinoa.

It was ok: Morgan was more taken with it than I was.  (I'm still looking for curry that tastes like the yellow curry at Noodles Etc.)

Sunday we went to Whole Foods to get groceries (add that as another cost of the race: it was impossible to leave our neighborhood by car, and Whole Foods is the only grocery store within walking distance, seeing as we live in one of those urban food deserts), and I made Lime and Honey Glazed Salmon with Warm Black Bean and Corn Salad, from Rachael Ray's 365: No Repeats.

It was pretty delicious, but because the salmon was from Whole Foods, it was also quite pricey.  Probably not any more than you would pay for a comparable dish at a restaurant, though, and at least I'm pretty confident that it actually was wild Alaskan salmon.  I'll make it again the next time I have company.

weekend update

Friday evening I went to the BSO to redeem my ticket vouchers (a thank-you gift for attending the Forte reception after attending "Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush", we think (which in itself is quite interesting, because anyone under forty would have been born no earlier than 1971, and therefore would not remember the Beatles at all (but maybe that's not necessary, since we don't remember Beethoven or Charlie Chaplin either, but can still appreciate them))), and, in the time between then and the concert, wandered around Artscape for a little bit.

Across the street from the BSO was a sculpture garden called "Rabbit Hole", which featured a sculpture garden which was only partially Alice-in-Wonderland themed, but did include a mad tea party

An inverted top hat (such as what the Mad Hatter might wear), with teacups and goldfish.
and a solar-powered music installation.

Greener art.
I saw an Art Car happening

Art happening.

and got a cheddar and mac n cheese sandwich from Grr Che.

I met up with Morgan, and we went to the "Classical Mystery Tour - A Tribute to the Beatles", a concert for which I clearly did not study enough.  Maybe I was just tired, but it seemed to me that one string bass was way too close to its microphone, and that the Paul McCartney impersonator should have stepped aside for an understudy if he had lost his voice.  This was one of those rare cases where the other (almost entirely older) BSO patrons seemed to appreciate the concert more than I did.

Saturday I went to lab, after which we went to Samos for lupper.  We went to Ikea in White Marsh and picked more laundry bins, a new pillow, some hangers, and a new welcome mat, and then saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.  *SPOILER ALERT* I was a little surprised that they changed the most cinematic moment of the book: I guess they wanted the audience to think *gasp* if they changed that part, what else have they changed?!?!?!.

Sunday went to lab, and Morgan continued to provide positive reinforcement by taking me to Sticky Rice for dinner.
